Elusive Story

Elusive Story | 2019 April
Story & Photography | Rachel Koontz

Dust on my keyboard

as I sit down to reach                           for a poem.

This town has changed

since that Thursday.

Charred fields

and brick-heavy hearts

I watched the smoke rise

and billow

until the sky turned black

I felt my own tender spirit swell

and burst,                                           not knowing where these tears were coming from

My soul’s sorrow,                              an unknown collective grief
